Moving School-Aged Children? Here Are Some Important Things To Consider:

As a local moving company, we know that moving can take an emotional toll on the entire family. For people with children, the impact can be quite large.

Children tend to magnify any scary situation or fear in their minds, so they may be feeling apprehensive about your big move. Besides dealing with a sense of loss over their current friends, local activities, and school teachers, they can also be insecure or fearful about making new friends.

Think back to when you were young. Your teachers likely played a pretty big role in your life. Your children may not only be worried about being accepted in their new school, but they could be fearful about their new teachers, academic standards, and the curricula that they will have to follow at the new school.

Young children do not always have the emotional vocabulary to voice their concerns to their parents. On top of this, they may not want to burden you with their anxieties about moving, especially if they have picked up that you are stressed and have a lot of things to deal with. So what can you do to help lighten their burden? Here are a few things to consider:

  • Talk About Feelings

Plan a family day or lunch with your children and give them your undivided attention. Tell them about your own worries regarding the move, such as meeting new colleagues, joining a new company or getting to know the local community. Discuss your strategies on how you intend to manage these changes to draw out their own feelings about the move. Talking them through their concerns can provide them with a lot of relief.

  • Get Them Excited

Ask them to browse the internet with you. Show them local parks and recreational activities, shops that might interest them, the library, and other attractions in their new home. If they are able to visualize all the fun they will have, their worried feelings may shift to anticipation.

  • Get Them Involved In The Move

Depending on the age of your children, they may be able to help with the move. Ask them to plan what they want to take with them and what they want to give away or sell. They can help to pick out boxes for packing, label boxes, and color code items for you. Getting them involved in the move will give them a sense of control over the move.

  • Turn Tasks Into A Game

Set aside family time during the move. Whether it is taking a pit-stop for a family lunch, turning boxes into a fort or bonding together as a unit, you can all become closer during this process.
